Vikings hope last winter's lessons help them win the D-II game they want the most: the last one.

The talent is undeniable. The chemistry is there. It seems like a perfect setup to what could be a dream season for the Rogers girls basketball team.

But head coach Frank Brow remains cautious. He's not ready to talk about basketball in February when the season hasn't even started yet.

"The goal is to win one game at a time," he said. "We'll play it all out as it goes."

Last season was an education for the young Vikings, whose semifinal loss showed what steps they needed to take to become champions. This year, Rogers returns with a lineup that's played together since they first started dribbling basketballs. They now understand how important they are to each other and what they need to do to win at Rhode Island College at the end of the season.

"We have a nice group of kids and they're all hard workers," Brow said. "All they want to do is get better and that's why we're excited for the season."

Two years ago, Brow had four freshmen in his starting lineup as Rogers went 5-13 playing in Division I. Last winter, in Division II, that same team was 8-1 and advanced to the semifinals before losing to Classical, 48-43.

"We needed to be tougher and that's the reason we got knocked out in the semifinals," Brow said. "We got out-toughed, plain and simple. It was inexperience. They had some big girls and a lot of tough kids."

It was a hard lesson to learn but it was an important one.

This winter, the Vikings are led by an impeccable junior class. Danaysha Cherry, Maeve Crowley, Ellie Margolis and Sydney Newsome have played together for so long they could do it blindfolded and still figure out where each other is on the court.

What makes the team work is their understanding of their roles. One piece isn't more important than the other and everyone — including seniors Katie Margolis and Riz Winters and junior Rylee Donovan — has a job to do on the court.

"These kids have been together for so long and they all feed off of each other," Brow said. "We have role players, we have scorers, a post player, a point guard, someone who does the dirty work. They're all consistent players."

Crowley had herself a heck of a season last winter. She was the team's most consistent scorer and averaged more than 19 points a game as she earned a spot on The Providence Journal All-State second team.

How she scores is how Crowley separates herself. She's not a volume shooter and doesn't chase points. They just kind of happen.

"Maeve's our most versatile scorer. She can do it on the perimeter or put it on the floor," Brow said. "The thing with Maeve is, as the game goes by, you think about how many she had and it feels like 12. Then you look and she has 24."

Newsome was a third-team All-Division guard last year and her improvement year to year has been noticeable. If Newsome continues to get better shooting from deep, it will make Rogers that much more difficult to defend.

Cherry, a 6-foot-1-inch post player, went stretches last winter during which she owned the paint. She battled hard against Classical big Melanie Jimenez and should be a double-double machine this winter.

"She has that warrior mentality," Brow said. "She has no fear."

Ellie and Katie Margolis do a lot of those things that don't always show up in a scorebook. Their ability to rebound, play tough on defense and knock down scoring opportunities make them as crucial as anyone else in the lineup.

While Brow isn't quite sure about his depth, Donovan and Winters should be able to contribute valuable minutes as other players learn what it takes to play varsity basketball.

"We're not counting on one player to carry us," Brow said. "It's not a bad problem to have, I guess."

With Classical and Division II champ Ponaganset now in Division I, Rogers and Westerly are the only semifinalists to return to D-II this season. Brow expects the Bulldogs to be tough this season and knows his team making a repeat trip to the semis, or further, is hardly a lock.

After making the quarterfinals with a freshman-dominated lineup in 2019-20, then moving up to Division I for last winter's short season, Juanita Sanchez returns to D-II this winter. The Cavaliers bring back star center Sabanna Berrios, elite scoring guard Nysia Ortiz and added second-team All-State selection Genesis McNeill — who was crucial to St. Raphael's Division I title last season — to the starting lineup.

West Warwick returns most of its core from last year's 7-2 team that fell to the Vikings in the quarterfinals.

Coventry is also back down from Division I and features a lineup loaded with seniors. East Providence is one of the youngest teams in the division but there is a lot of talent in that youth and, along with Cranston East, could be dark horses in the division.

Woonsocket had success in Division III with young talent and now that youth has experience and could be a factor in D-II.

These teams — along with the surprises that annually show up during the grind that is a full season — are why Brow doesn't want to get too excited. Not now. Not yet.

"The ultimate goal is to win the last game of the season," Brown said. "But to do that, we need to execute better. We need to work on toughness, need to work on getting better on a daily basis.

"That's what great teams do — they come to work every day."

So that's what Rogers will do.
